Transverse Plane

The anatomical plane in which rotational movements occur.

The transverse plane is an imaginary horizontal plane that divides the body into upper and lower portions. Rotation around the body's vertical axis occurs primarily in this plane.

Examples of Transverse-Plane Movement

  • Trunk rotation during a golf or baseball swing
  • Hip rotation during running or throwing
  • Shoulder rotation during a tennis serve
  • Turning the head from side to side

Transverse-plane motion can be challenging to quantify with a single 2D camera because body segments may move toward or away from the lens. A view that is useful for one phase of a movement may obscure another phase.

Coaches often use multiple camera angles or side-by-side comparisons to understand rotational sequencing. Visible landmarks, consistent camera placement, and awareness of perspective error are important when interpreting rotation from ordinary video.
