Gait Analysis

The systematic assessment of walking or running mechanics.

Gait analysis is the structured observation and measurement of how a person walks or runs. It divides continuous movement into repeatable phases so that timing, joint positions, symmetry, and movement patterns can be examined consistently.

Common Gait Measures

A basic video gait analysis may use side, front, or rear views. Frame-by-frame review helps identify events such as initial contact, toe-off, and transitions between stance and swing. Consistent camera placement and a clearly visible subject make comparisons between recordings more meaningful.

Gait analysis is used in coaching, movement screening, rehabilitation, footwear assessment, and research. Video can document visible movement patterns, but interpreting their cause may require additional information such as strength testing, force measurements, symptoms, or clinical examination.
